Sister Mary John (Geraldine) O’Rourke, OSU died peacefully May 22, 2015, at St. Ursula Center, Blue Point. She was born September 11, 1936, in Ozone Park, NY. She entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in September 1954 and professed her final vows six years later.

Sister Mary John graduated from St. John’s University in Jamaica, NY with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education followed by a Certificate in Administration. She earned a Masters in History from St. Joseph’s College, West Hartford, CT, and a Certificate in Theology from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkley, CA.

She served as principal in St. Gregory the Great School in Danbury for 22 years. Before this, she taught in Our Lady of Grace School, Howard Beach, NY, Nativity BVM School, Ozone Park, NY, Holy Family High School, Huntington, NY. She served as principal in St. Thomas the Apostle School, West Hartford, CT, St. Gregory the Great School, Harrison, NY, and St. Lawrence O’Toole School, Brewster, NY.

Sr. Mary John was an exceptional Catholic School educator and a leader in the Bridgeport Diocese curriculum mapping process and technology initiatives. She led the entire school community to earn the distinction of being a 2010 -2011 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education.

She leaves her sister Patricia Kingsley, several cousins, and her religious sisters of the Ursuline community. She was predeceased by her brother James O’Rourke.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on May 28 at St. Gregory the Great Church in Danbury, CT and on May 29 at St. Ursula Convent in Blue Point, NY followed by internment at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters in Blue Point.
