Sister Lorraine (Sr. Edward) O’Neil, OSU died May 8, 2009, at the St. Ursula Center Convent in Blue Point, NY. She was born July 27, 1918. She entered the congregation on September 8, 1932, and professed her vows three years later.
Sr. Lorraine ministered for many years as a teacher. Her ministry was extensive and included teaching at St. William the Abbot in Seaford, NY; Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach, NY; Nativity BVM in Ozone Park, NY; St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hartford, CT; and Our Lady of Victory in West Haven, CT.
After retiring from teaching, Sr. Lorraine felt called to minister to the needy, spiritually and physically. The Ministry of Care and Services coordinated by Sr. Lorraine served the people of Howard Beach, Hamilton Beach, Ozone Park, and Woodhaven. Food, clothing, furniture, and healthcare were provided through the assistance of generous parishioners.
In 1979, Sr. Lorraine became a leader of the Amazing Prayer Group to facilitate charismatic renewal among its members and to sensitize them to the presence of the Holy Spirit. After many years of active service, Sr. Lorraine retired in Blue Point where she continued in a ministry of prayer. She was the liaison for the St. Ursula Center healing masses and also took on the responsibility of caring for the St. Ursula Center Chapel.
She was preceded in death by her sister Bernadette Canner and nephews Charles Canner and John G. Bellew, FDNY.
She is survived by her sister Marguerite O’Neil-Bellew, brother-in-law Terrance Bellew and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Her funeral mass was celebrated May 10th at the St. Ursula Center Chapel in Blue Point, NY followed by internment on May 11th at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters in Blue Point.
