Sr. Margaret Golub’s love for children, books and penguins inspired her to write The Lonely Penguin, a children’s book which tells of the adventures of a lonely penguin as she travels the world looking for someone like herself. The book is beautifully illustrated by an Our Lady of Victory 8th grade student, Deni Nakonecni.
“This is a story about ecology and global warming, but it goes beyond that. Teachers who read the books to students are able to talk about race relations, and meeting others who may or may not look like us, yet have their own uniqueness and similarities,” explained Sr. Margaret.
The book has taken on its own worldwide adventure with copies traveling to Peru, India, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Japan and Germany bringing joy and inspiration wherever it goes. Sr. Margaret began telling this story over 20 years ago. She has entertained and inspired many children with this story told with the help of her hand-puppets. She is looking forward to publishing sequels to this story.
Sr. Margaret’s ministry has centered around reading and education. She taught at Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach, New York and worked as a librarian for many years at St. William the Abbot in Seaford, NY; Holy Family High School in South Huntington, NY; Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach, NY; Most Precious Blood School in Long Island City, NY; St. Anne’s in Garden City, NY and St. Anastasia’s in Douglaston, NY.
Sr. Margaret was born in Moodus, CT. She attended St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT. After graduation in 1957 she joined the Ursuline community. The book is dedicated to Sr. Margaret’s mother, Blanche Golub.
The Lonely Penguin may be purchased for $10.00 plus $2.00 shipping and handling.
