Sister Mary Joseph McCarthy, OSU died December 20, 2011 at the Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, NY. She was born March 19, 1914 in Fethard, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk on January 10, 1928 and professed her final vows seven years later.

Sr. Joseph ministered for many years in Catholic Education. She began her elementary school teaching career in 1931 at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park, NY. From there she ministered at Our Lady of Victory in West Haven, CT and taught at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hartford, CT. After ministering for over 20 years in education, she served as the Director of Studies for Ursuline Sisters for another twenty years.

In 1969 she returned to Our Lady of Victory in West Haven, CT to director the parish’s Religious Education program. In 1972 she went to St. William the Abbot Parish in Seaford, NY to serve as Director of Religious Education. From 1992 – 1995 she work with the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. William the Abbot visiting the sick. She retired from active ministry in 1995 at the age of 81 and moved to St. Ursula Center in Blue Point.

She is survived by two sisters in Ireland and several nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on December 27 at the St. Ursula Center Chapel in Blue Point, NY followed by internment at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters in Blue Point.
