Brussels, Belgium, August 2008
Sister Margaret O’Brien was elected General Superior for the next six years at the General Chapter meeting in Brussels, Belgium. She succeeds Sr. Judith O’Connor who served as General Superior since 1996.
Sr. Margaret will oversee the Ursuline provinces in India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium, Canada and US. One priority for the congregation is the support of the younger and growing provinces in India and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Efforts are being made to assist them in becoming more self-supporting.
Sr. Margaret, who was born in Leamington Spa, England to Irish-born parents, joined the congregation in 1967. Following her formation, she taught at St. William the Abbot in Seaford from 1972-1975. From there she taught at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park and Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens. She also ministered as Formation Director for many years and has been active as a spiritual director and a facilitator. In her new role she looks forward to fostering ministries of non-violence, social justice, outreach to the poor and will continue to emphasize spirituality among sisters and associates. |
